NEW DELHI, Nov. 6: A day after the Cabinet approved the 10 per cent disinvestment in profit-making public sector undertakings (PSUs), the Trinamul Congress which is a key constituent of the Congress-led UPA said that it remained steadfast in its opposition to the move.
Ironically though, party chief Mamata Banerjee was not present at the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meeting on Thursday when the crucial policy decision was taken. The reason being given by the Trinamul for its failure to oppose the disinvestment move was Ms Banerjee’s absence — she is away in Kolkata, busy with the Assembly bypolls, voting for which is to be held on Saturday.
Partha Chatterjee, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly on Friday maintained that the party’s stand against disinvestment remains and that "we won’t compromise on our agenda and the interest of the people".
Partha Chatterjee told this newspaper that the decision on whether a PSU should go in for disinvestment should rest with the concerned ministry or the concerned PSU.
The Trinamul had made its opposition to disinvestment clear in its election manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls held earlier this year.
