NEW DELHI, Sept. 7: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday declared that any new government that comes to power after the next parliamentary elections, other than the Congress, should get the Indo-US nuclear deal terminated.
"Earlier, we withdrew our support to the Congress-led UPA government on this issue and we are now fighting against this ruling coalition. The struggle to rescind or reverse this deal is not over. After the next elections, our goal will be to see that the new government takes steps to terminate the 123 Agreement. We will work for this," he said.
Briefing mediapersons after the two-day CPI(M) politburo meeting, Mr Prakash Karat said the NSG waiver, opening the door to nuclear trade for India, is neither clean nor unconditional and reflects the continuous concessions that India made to the United States. Since the joint statement of July 18, 2005, India has given in steadily to the US pressure, starting with the 123 Agreement, the IAEA safeguard and now finally the NSG waiver.
"The passage of the NSG waiver on the current terms is designed to make India adhere more firmly to the terms and conditions of the US Hyde Act," he said.
Though, India is not part of the NSG, the government has also agreed to an open-ended commitment that it will abide by all NSG guidelines, including future changes, irrespective of what these changes might be.
